Match No. 502 - Friday, 28th May 1976, 8:00pm

  • Assist: Joe Royle. "[Brooking] produced a cross from the right wing that put the opposition in trouble. Right-footed from 9 yards., 46' 45:31
  • Assist: Gordon Hill. "The blow seemed to unnerve the Italians and almost at once Thompson was rising to meet Hill's corner from the right and send back a header that eluded several flailing limbs before going beyond Zoff, who had been distracted by the confusion in front of him." Phil ThompsonOnly Goal. Header from 10 yards., 48' 47:45
  • Assist: Trevor Brooking. "Brooking manoeuvred beautifully for space on the right, and when he centred high, Channon combined power with stealth as he clsoed to score." Mick Channon16th of 21 goals. Left-footed from 7 yards., 54' 53:00

Notes

  • Playing SurfaceThe pitch was not ideal, the grass was too long and one half of the pitch was the sand of the baseball diamond. However, all the goals were scored at the other end of the pitch. Also, throughout the entire match the stadium announcer updates the mostly Italian-American crowd everytime the ball goes off the pitch or the referee whistles: "Throw in", "Goal Kick", "Offside".
  • Goals DisallowedEngland have the ball in the net in the 62nd minute but Hill is adjudged to be offside. Italy likewise in the 93rd minute; Giacinto Facchetti's last gasp equaliser is ruled out due to Capello's barge into Corrigan.
