Match No. 618 - Sunday, 22nd June 1986, 12:00pm

  • "Television evidence clearly shows that Argentina's first goal went in off Maradona's wrist after he had gone up for a high ball with Shilton." Diego Maradona, 51'50:27
  • "Bobby Robson had always said that Maradonna was capable of winning a game on his own in five minutes. Maradonna must have heard him for now he collected the ball on the right and set off on a marvellous run. Stevens was beaten by a sway of the hips, Butcher with a shrug of the shoulders, and Fenwick with contemptuous ease. Shilton was given no chance." Diego Maradona, 55'54:16

Notes

  • Disputed GoalWith the benefit of television replays it is clear that Maradona beats Shilton to the ball by the use of his hand, however the Tunisian referee allowed the goal to stand. Maradona would later claim it was "The Hand of God". There is little doubting his genius for the second goal, although if one were a cynical Englishman, he would point out the foul on Hoodle prior to the Argentine number 10's amazing run.
