Match No. 815 - Thursday, 17th June 2004, 5:00pm

  • Assist: Michael Owen. "The opening arose after Fabio Celestini, an unsatisfactory replacement for the suspended Johann Vogel, lost the ball in midfield. Eriksson's side switched play to the right, where the determination of Gerrard led to a foul by Benjamin Huggel. The referee Valentin Ivanov shrewdly played the advantage and Beckham's deep cross from the right was controlled by Michael Owen before he angled himself to clip the cross that Rooney headed home." Wayne Rooney6th of 53 goals. Header from 5 yards., 23' 22:26
  • Assist: Darius Vassell. "Rooney's second goal, his seventh in 15 internationals, was also marked by elan. Darius Vassell, once more an assertive presence, fought to reach a pass from his fellow substitute Owen Hargreaves. Switzerland whined that he had fouled his husky marker Patrick Müller but the debate never distracted the Everton striker. He smashed a shot off the post and it cannoned into the net off the head of the diving Stiel. The convention nowadays is not to deem such incidents own-goals." Wayne Rooney7th of 53 goals. Right-footed from 15 yards., 75' 74:48
  • Assist: Gary Neville. "...David Beckham released Gary Neville and Steven Gerrard, who had worked inexhaustibly for his moment of joy, smashed the ball home via the body of the goalkeeper Jörg Stiel." Steven Gerrard4th of 21 goals. Right-footed from 7 yards., 82' 81:26

Notes

  • Haas: Red CardSent off for two fouls. The first was a two-footed challege on Gerrard which made the Englishman cry out in pain. The second was just a clumsy tackle on Ashely Cole and slightly harsh. Ivanonv, the referee, ran over to book Haas and then looked at his yellow card list, realised he'd already booked him, and had no choice but to send him off. We suspect if the referee had looked at his list before reaching for the yellow, Haas might have stayed on.
