  • Cameroon qualified for the 1982 World Cup in which they managed to hold Italy, Poland and Peru to draws. Sadly, they went no further in the tournament. It was the 1990 World Cup where Cameroon and possibly Africa really burst onto the scene. They defeated reigning champions Argentina in the opening match before dispatching Romania and then Columbia in the second round. In the quarter-final they met England but despite going 2-1 up in the second half they eventually lost out to two Gary Lineker penalties. In the next meeting Gary Lineker converted from the spot again before adding his fourth goal against Cameroon in the second half. In the four meetings between the two sides England have never failed to score at least two goals.
