  • UEFA Nations League

  • 2018-present

  • The UEFA Nations League was unanimously adopted by all members of UEFA in 2014 to replace the increasing irrelvance of friendly matches. The first matches took place in autumn 2018 with all 55 member associations in UEFA divided into four leagues based on the UEFA rankings at the end of 2017. Each league has four groups of teams which play each other on a home and way basis. Every other year a Nations League Finals will be played for the top four teams in League A whilst leagues B, C, D will enjoy promotion and relegation. Each UEFA Nations League is linked to the following year's European Championship or World Cup meaning that group winners can enjoy another chance to qualify via playoffs.
For the first season (2018-2019) England won their group and proceeded to the June finals where they finished third overall.
In the third season (2022-23) England were relegated to league B.
