Competition Info

  • World Cup Qualifier

  • 1949-present

  • The 1949-50 Home Championship was used as qualification Group 1 for the World Cup 1950. England and Scotland both qualified, in first and second place, but Scotland declined the invitation, mostly because of the distance and expense required to travel to Brazil but officially because they believed that only the outright winners should be allowed to attend (England beat Scotland 1-0 to win the Championship).
The following World Cup in Sweden in 1954 used the 1953-54 Home Championship as a ready-made qualifying group. Both England and Scotland qualified, but this time both teams took up the invitation as the tournament was only a short distance. Scotland by then didn't have any problem with finishing second that year!
The use of the Home Championship as a qualifying competition was abandoned for the next World Cup.
