61:10 "Rooney walking from the field on the hour, a red card waved above his petulant head after an ill-advised entanglement with the most delicate part of Ricardo Carvalho's anatomy. Whether there was intent is impossible to say. It looked, without prejudice, a moment of unstructured argy-bargy. And the Chelsea man made the most of it."

      Notes

      • Rooney: Red Card (a breakdown)Rooney scraps for the ball first with Petit and then with Carvalho. As he does so he stamps on Carvalho [60:51] and the referee, who is no more than a foot away, blows his whistle and signals just for a free kick. He makes no attempt to reach for any card, in fact his view is blocked by Rooney. Ronaldo rushes 15 yards to the referee to remonstrate that Carvalho has been stamped on, something that Rooney takes exception to and pushes Ronaldo. It is at this point that the referee takes Rooney aside and brandishes the red card. It's probable, from the tv footage, that the referee didn't see the stamp and decided to send Rooney off for the push on Ronaldo.
      • Portugal win 3-1 on Penalty Kicks
Simão scored. Placed to Robinson's right, well out of his reach into the side netting.
Lampard saved by Ricardo. Placed to the left of Ricardo but the keeper guesses correctly and beats the ball away.
Hugo Viana hits the post. Goes for power into the right corner but it slams off the upright. Robinson had dived the wrong way.
Owen Hargreaves scores. Blasted into the bottom corner. Ricardo had guessed correctly and dived to his right but couldn't keep it out.
Petit saved by Robinson. Again, low and to the right of the keeper, who guesses correctly and gets his finger tips to it to divert it wide of the post. It is possible the ball would have either hit the post or gone wide anyway but Robinson's fingertips make sure.
Steven Gerrard saved by Ricardo. A reasonable height to the keeper's left. Ricardo, again, guesses correctly and it's a comfortable save. Not a good penalty.
Helga Postiga scores. Similar to Gerrard's penalty but the other side. If Robinson had guessed correctly it would have been a simple save but he dances on his line and takes a step to his left and just watches it go past him.
Jamie Carragher saved by Ricardo. Carragher steps up and places the ball to Ricardo's left. The goalkeeper doesn't move with his arms stretched wide. Apparently the referee hadn't blown his whistle so a re-take is required. This time Carragher second guesses himself and tries to place it to the keeper's left. It's an awful penalty and easy for Ricardo to save via the crossbar.
Ronaldo scores. Placed into the side netting to Robinson's left. The keeper had dived the wrong way.
Just like two years ago Ricardo won this shoot-out for Portugal. He got a hand on all four of England's kicks whereas Robinson guessed wrong two out of four. In truth there was a lot of dross from both sides. Simão's, Lampard's, Hargreaves' and Ronaldo's attempts were reasonable and unluckily, it was only Lampard's that was saved. The other five were poor; Postiga's should have been saved and the rest were saved or missed the target.
