  • The Algerian football association was formed in 1962 after the country gained independence from France. They played their first international against Bulgaria in 1963 and joined FIFA in 1964. They qualified for their first World Cup in 1982 where they surprised everyone by beating West Germany in their first game. Having also beaten Chile in the group stages they were on the brink of the quarter-finals before the infamous "Disgrace of Gijon" or the "Anschluss" match between West Germany and Austria, the final group game. Knowing that a 1-0 win for West Germany would send the two European teams through they conspired to play out the game with very little effort or attempt to create any shots at goal. Following this match FIFA changed its rules so that final group game matches would be played simultaneously.
The only meeting between England and Algeria was a group stage match at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa which resulted in a 0-0 draw.
