• Porteous was born in Newcastle but his family soon moved north of the border to Dalkeith. He started his football career at Heart of Midlothian before a stint at Kilmarnock. His break came with a move to Sunderland in early 1890 where he joined the 'team of talents' and won two football league championships in 19892 and 1893. After 1894 he moved to Rotherham and then on to Manchester City. He retired to Blackpool. A glazier by trade.
