  • Ernest Harwood Greenhalgh was born in 1849 to Herbert John and Emma Ann Greenhalgh. His father was a lace manufacturer. EH joined Notts County in 1867 and immediately improved the team. He was made captain soon afterwards and stayed with them for 16 years before retiring.
It is difficult to assertain which name he preferred to use. Certificates and census transcripts record his name variably as Ernest Harwood, Harwood Ernest, Harwood, Ernest H and E Harwood. Proprietor of the Field Mill in Mansfield where the company's Mechanics team played. Mansfield Town's stadium is built where the mill was demolished and still bears the name.
