However, he fell foul of the professionalism rules, which forbade amateurs to receive a match fee, and was suspended by the Rugby Football Union. He switched codes and joined Bolton Wanderers as a goalkeeper in September 1889. It was during this spell that he was called up for England on four occasions. In 1894 Bolton got to the FA Cup final but lost 4-1 to Notts County. After 332 appearances for Bolton he moved to Millwall Athletic in April 1902 where he received his final cap the following March. Shortly afterwards he moved back north to Manchester United in May 1903 where he stayed for two seasons moving back south to Plymouth Argyle in January 1905 where he stayed for seven years and 214 appearances. He left for Southend United at the end of the 1911/12 season where he became player/coach. He was appointed coach of Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem in 1914 but returned soon after war broke out and worked at Bradford City as a coach.

He is the last person to represent England at both Football and Rugby Union.
