  • Charles Alcock was a colossus in early English football. As first secretary of the FA he pioneered the first unofficial international matches between England and Scotland from 1870 which eventually led the first ever international in 1872. Sadly, he missed the first two official internationals he was instrumental in setting up, due to injury, but was one of the umpires in the first game. He captained the third game and scored the second goal.
He also created the FA Cup competition and lifted the trophy with his Wanderers club in the first final in 1872. He remained FA secretary until 1896. He also played county cricket for Essex and Surrey, hence the coincidence that the first internationals in England were played at the Oval! He also referreed the FA Cup final in 1875 and 1879.
Unquestionably the father of English football, and most definately the father of international football.
