  • William Brindle was born in Darwen in 1853 and played junior football before signing for Darwen where he helped them become the first Northern club to reach the FA Cup fourth round (quarter-finals) in 1879 where they were beaten by Old Etonians after two replays (5-5, 2-2, 6-2).
In March 1880 he won his first cap against Scotland in a 5-4 defeat and was reselected two days later for the match against Wales in which he scored the first goal, rare for a full-back. In fact, the first such full back to do so. Sadly, the game ended prematurely for Brindle as he was injured 15 minutes after scoring and had to leave the field. Charles Alcock described him succinctly: "Strong back: kicks well". In 1881 Darwen went one better and reached the semi-finals. He moved to Blackburn Olympic in the mid 1880s before emigrating to the United States in 1887. A paper maker by trade and later in the USA and took up a position managing the Spring Lawn Mills in Pennsylvania. He died in Massachusetts in 1900.
