At 16 years and 185 days he became the youngest player to play in the top flight on 4th April 1953 against Cardiff. He quickly became a team regular and won his first cap two years later (almost to the day) whilst also helping United to two League titles.
His fate was to be part of the Munich Air Crash on 6th February 1958 when the Manchester United charter flight crashed on take-off after refueling in Munich on the way home from a successful European Cup tie against Red Star Belgrade. He died 15 days later of his injuries.
A centre half of immense physique and a fantastic footballing brain, Stanley Matthew's called him "a rock in a raging sea" and Bobby Moore likened him to the Rock of Gibraltar.
