  • Notes: Reginald Erskine 'Tip' Foster was always destined for sporting greatness. He is the only man to captain England at both football and cricket. One of seven Foster brothers he excelled at sport at Malvern College before going down to University College, Oxford where started his first class career as well as football, golf and racquet sports. Football-wise he turned out regularly for the Corinthians and received his first call up in 1900 for a total of five caps - captaining the side on his last appearance in 1902. He also turned out for Worcestershire who were still a minor county but in 1899 the received first class status and Tip and his brother Wilfred both scored centuries in their first season. He played, in all, 139 first class games and was named a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1901 and was given his first test cap in the Ashes tour of 1903 where he promptly scored a then world record 287. He died of a diabetes related illness in May 1914 at the age of 36.
