Match No. 701 - Wednesday, 13th October 1993

  • "Koeman first tried the Dorigo approach, hammering his shot against a thicket of bodies. But now the referee ordered the kick to be retaken because England had not retreated the proper distance, and Koeman, given a second chance, floated the ball expertly into the top left-hand corner." Ronald Koeman, 62'61:19
  • "...the unmarked Bergkamp gathered a flick from Ronald De Boer and his shot, though lacking full power, was still accurate enough to beat Seaman at the near post." Dennis Bergkamp, 68'67:53

Notes

  • Goal DisallowedFrank Rijkaard had a goal disallowed on 41 minutes [40:40] for offside which TV replays suggest he was at least two yards onside with three defenders playing him on.
  • Match Controversy"In the 56th minute [56:36] a raking crossfield pass from Sinton found Platt bursting through on the sweeper's blind side. As he reached the penalty arc, Ronnie Koeman stepped across him and took him out of the game. For a moment it appeared that the referee had given England a penalty. Instead they had a free-kick and Koeman saw only a yellow card, so Holland could count themselves fortunate on two counts."
The referee was correctly overruled by the linesman on the position of the foul. Initial contact of Koeman pulling back Platt's arm was in the penalty arc but Koeman was the last man and was very fortunate to stay on the field. Dorigo's free kick, from the edge of the box, is charged down by Wouters [57:48] who is clearly no more than 6 yards away as he has reached the penalty spot as the ball strikes him. Exactly two minutes later Netherlands were awarded a free kick [59:48] in an almost identical place in the opposite penalty arc. On Koeman's first attempt he tries the Dorigo approach hammering it into Paul Ince who, just like Wouters, had rushed out to the penalty spot [60:44]. Ince gets a card for his troubles. Koeman gets another go - and everyone, bar the English defence, can see by the way he stands behind the ball as to what is going to happen next, even Brian Moore on commentry "He's going to flick one now, He's going to flick one!" Koeman flicks it into the corner [61:19].
