  • Les Bleus played their first international game against Belgium in a 3-3 draw in Brussels in 1904. Their early record was hardly inspiring; during the Olympics Games in London 1908 they lost 17-1 to Denmark; and they shipped 21 goals in the first six meetings with England in the 1920s.
They lifted their first trophy: Euro '84 on home soil beating Spain 2-0 in the final. They bettered that when they took the double crown of World Cup winners in 1998 and European Champions in 2000.
Despite England's early dominance, both teams have been relatively even since the 1950s (the last 19 games have resulted in seven wins each and five draws). They have met twice in World Cup finals (1966 and 1982) with England winning both games and three times in European Championships (1992, 2004 and 2012) resulting in two draws and a French win.
