  • The Austrian national team started out with a 5-0 win over Hungary on 12th October 1902. Three years later England would play their first ever fixture outside the British Isles when they travelled to Vienna as part of a four game tour that would also see them play Hungary and Bohemia. It's wasn't until the 1930s that Austrian football came to the fore as the "Wunderteam" but sadly despite being one of the favourites to win the 1938 World Cup they were denied participation under the Anschluss where the Austrian team was abolished.
England have a good record against Austria. They average over three goals a game against them and the only losses so far have all been friendlies (the last being in 1979).
