Country Info

  • Slovenia

  • Nogometna zveza Slovenije

  • Founded: 1920

  • Federation: UEFA

  • Although the Slovenian football association was founded in 1920, it had to wait until independence following the break-up of Yugoslavia in 1991 for affiliation with FIFA and UEFA. The first official match was a one-all draw with Estonia in 1992.
Slovenia have qualified for the European Championship once (2000) and the World Cup twice (2002 & 2010); in the latter tournament they met England in the final match of the group stage where a Jermain Defoe goal decided the game. England have a 100% record against Slovenia in their four games, the latest during qualifying for Euro '16 where Slovenia were beaten 3-1 at Wembley and 3-2 in Ljublijana. They are paired in qualification for the 2018 World Cup.
