      Notes

      • Player injuriesAfter only 35 seconds Paul Scholes goes in hard in a tackle and scrapes his boot down Håkan Mild's leg and into his chest. It's a reckless challenge, one which the referee misses. Mild is stretchered off, and receives treatment on the sidelines before being subbed by Magnus Svensson [6:44]. It would not be the last poor tackle Scholes makes today. All of England's substitutions are forced. Keown suffered a hamstring injury during the first half and Le Saux was replaced at half time as he was feeling the effects of a virus. Beckham twists a knee crossing the ball [74:09].
      • Paul Scholes: Red CardPaul Scholes became the first England player sent off on English soil after committing two cautionable offences, late tackles on Stefan Schwarz. The first was a clumsy, mistimed challenge [27:40] the second was a little bit more rash [50:52]. The first caution had already caused him to miss the next match against Bulgaria, the red card [51:02] will force him to miss the Luxembourg game too.
