- Notes: One of the finest amateur centre forwards of the early 20th century. His record of 29 international goals in only 23 caps is remarkable, scoring 23 of them whilst captain in his last 14 appearances. Woodward played for Clacton Town, Harwich & Parkeston and Chelmsford before signing for Tottenham Hotspur in 1901 where he became a director whilst still playing in 1908 - he helped Spurs reach the first division that season. After England's European tour of Hungary and Austria in 1909 in which he scored nine goals in three days, he decided to retire from the game but was persuaded to change his mind and join Chelsea. He stayed there until the outbreak of the First World War and enlisted in the 17th Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment where he attained the rank of captain. He also played in 30 amateur internationals from 1906 to 1914 an English record. He was also captain of the British Olympic team, that won gold at both the 1908 and 1912 games.
