  • Birley attended Winchester College and then Oxford – where he received his Blue in 1874 and won the FA Cup with Oxford University in the same year. He played for Wanders from 1873 and received an FA Cup winners medal that year before rising to captain them in their 1876 and 1877 FA Cup wins. He was originally selected to win his third cap for England as captain for the 1876 Scotland game but was unavailable for reasons unknown. Played cricket for Lancashire, Surrey and minor county Cheshire. A Barrister by profession, called to the bar at Inner Temple in January 1876 and then as a JP in Surrey.
