  • Born and breed in Preston, just a stone throw from the Preston North End ground Deepdale, Sir Tom made a name for himself during the Second World War through war-time friendly matches but had to wait until the end of hostilities for his debut in August 1946. An England call up was only natural a month later. Finney spent 14 years at Preston notching up 433 appearances and 187 goals. He was knighted in 1998 and was footballer of the year 1954 & 1957 but never won a major club honour. His solitary FA Cup Final appearance was in 1954 where Preston lost 2-3 to West Bromich Albion.
    Eqaully adept on the left or right wing, and occassionly as a centre forward.
