Notes:
Whitfield was educated at Eton College before attending Trinity College, Cambridge winning cricket blues (1878-1881) and football blues (1879-1881). He also participated in athletics and real tennis. During his university years he turned out for Old Etonians whom he helped win the FA Cup in 1879 and runners-up in 1881. He played 75 first-class cricket matches for Cambridge University and then Sussex from 1878, becoming captain in 1882. Professionally he was a banker who worked for Barclays Bank.
