Competition Info

  • European Championship Finals

  • 1968-present

  • Originally entitled the European Nations Cup, the first tournament was held in France in 1960 which England declined to participate alongside other notable absentees such as West Germany and Italy. Until 1980 only the semi-finals and final was played in the host country. Prior rounds were on a home and away basis.
Until 2021, England's best showings were a pair of semi-finals in 1968 and 1996 the latter on home soil. Penalties saw them eliminated in that edition and also at the quarter-final stage in 2004 and 2012. The delayed 2021 event saw England reach the final but despite playing most of the tournament at Wembley Stadium they just could not get over the line and were agonisingly pipped by Italy...on penalties.
